Nobody Told Me
I don't know why I'm so fascinated with John Lennon's "Nobody Told Me." I think it's because reverb on the vocals aside, you can hear the 80's creeping in. I could imagine, had he lived, Lennon might have gone the Bowie route and gone on the arena circuit to play the hits, and cash in, but maybe I'm projecting since that seems like a thing most artists did.
The song itself is just one contradiction after the other starting with "Everybody's talking and no one says a word." And that's the case with the song. It doesn't build, and it doesn't climax. It never changes its midtempo chug. It just plods along, and with the exception of the insanely catchy chorus, there's not much to it. Which of course is why it's so good. It's an instant singalong, that from lyric one, doesn't ask you to think about the lyrics. Also Tony Levin is on bass.
I also found this Flaming Lips cover which is appropriately 90's and sludgey and I imagine a few people were on the nod in the room when this was recorded.
